Catherine Stringer is a Tasmanian painter, living and working in Hobart, best known for her dreamy, evocative images of figures underwater. She has been exhibiting regularly since 2002, both locally and interstate, and also recently in France, where she undertook a two month residency in 2007.

Catherine's work has also includes collaborations with a wide variety of other artists and performers, in a range of settings.

My art practice has always been inspired by my love of the sea, and of water in general. My work uses water as symbol and metaphor to explore spiritual issues, and aspects of life that are 'beneath the surface' - the world of thought and feeling, of the subconscious and the intuitive, of poetry and dreams.

The paintings in the Endangered exhibitionÊreflect my reverence and respect for all waters, and are a response to the sacredness of water. It is the source of all creativity, the womb of life.
